Do the New Paradigms of SMAC Improve Productivity of Enterprises?

SMAC
An omnipresent internet has enabled corporates and communities to connect, collaborate and communicate regardless of geography. Multiple case studies have shown the increasing power of technology to achieve the outcomes, and bring in a viral response for the greater good.

Online giants like Ola, Uber, Flipkart, Netflix, Oyo etc, communities on Social Media like on Twitter, Facebook, Change.org are influencing the outcomes for society, businesses and even governments leveraging technology and new paradigms to achieve the new goals with ease.

The paradigms of SMAC have opened up new models of collaboration, co-creation, cooperation, communication and content generation. Many traditional enterprises now plan to adopt this into the mainstream to achieve their goals and objectives.

In this article, we discuss the paradigms of SMAC on what they are, who benefits and finally our point of view in adopting these paradigms within the enterprise for productivity improvements.

Explaining the paradigms of SMAC

SMAC is a stack made of a variety of components. These components can operate as an integrated solution to deliver maximum business results. The discrete implementation of SMAC components has its own scope and benefits as compared to the overall stack. Information Security is a common concern for all the enterprises whether or not implemented as integrated stack or individually.

These paradigms in the corporate world indicate a larger social and secular shifts that is taking place in the use of technology, transparency in the conduct and treatment of its stakeholders and customers. Primarily, it has changed three key factors that pertain to an Enterprise:

  • Empowerment of its Consumers, Customers, Employees, Stakeholders and Shareholders.
  • Agility & Responsiveness to the requirements of the markets that they operate in.
  • Interdependence amongst partners through innovation for improving the time-to- market.

Social

When products and services of enterprises go beyond traditional market segments, geographies and demographics, Social is the new way of quickly adapting to the explosion of new needs. For most enterprises, the social paradigm is still to be present and reachable electronically to its stakeholders, be it customers or employees. It is one more channel of communication through a Twitter handle or a Facebook page. For B2C, the social paradigm has become an instant customer grievance and promotion medium.

Only a few matured enterprises are leading the way of embracing this paradigm of Social by integrating into their Quality Management Processes like NPS (Net Promoter Score), Sentiment Analysis, CSAT surveys, Product/Service Quality Improvement plans, new product/service launches.

CMS IT Point of View:  Digital Information surrounding People, Processes, Products, Functions, Customers, and Enterprises is the new currency. It is critical in order to gain insights and bring in differentiation for survival.

In the earlier paradigm of ‘measurement’, it could be throughput (Rate at which company makes its revenue) of men, or method and machines changed to a hyper scale with the advent of Social as phenomenon to discover the new value in business. In today’s competitive business environment, disruptions in digital world are faster than ever before. If enterprises haven’t adopted a digital strategy yet, Social should be the first paradigm that they need to evaluate, and pilot for business needs. Social is not a technology initiative but a business strategy that can enable enterprises to gain and sustain competitive advantage and stay ahead in the market.

Mobile:

This paradigm has changed its flavour and constituents at a faster pace and emerged as one of the key influencers of the digital strategy for every enterprise. While many enterprises started with the Device (Remember the Blackberry revolution and making Email accessible over the device), it has transformed quickly to Device with On Demand Apps like Enterprise Application Marketplace for its employees, applications in global marketplaces like Windows, Google market stores re-defining the convenience with Audio, Video calls, Applications for approvals and Reporting dashboards over mobile devices.

Mobile devices, Mobile Applications and Mobile Device Management reconfigured the boundaries of an enterprise and has made any task possible, anytime and anywhere. If enterprises focus in making legacy applications accessible over mobile devices it will help in narrowing the divide in order to make their users more productive.

CMS IT Point of View: Mobile is a new paradigm and if aligned with business objectives enterprises can lead the disruption in traditional operations and as well as provide a new dimension of productivity for the entire business. Again, Mobile is not just one technology, it is a portfolio of devices, application platform and management console. It is a solution strategy that the business and technology leaders of enterprises must consider pro-actively and implement continuously for the future with the right security measures.

Analytics

Analytics and Analysis can give a major advantage in decision-making for an individual, corporate or a country. The goal of Analytics is to decrease the time taken for business decision-making and increase the probability of that being the most appropriate decision.

Analytics has become the new capital for every enterprise. Availability of data in its various forms (structured & unstructured) alters the outcome when it provides insights in the right context and to the right set of people and at the right time.

Applying analytics in real-time business scenarios has seen steep rise in the recent past as enterprises have realized the power of data once again.  The first wave of importance of data occurred during the years of TQM (Total Quality Management), Six Sigma and Lean process implementations. Modern technologies of Big Data, Visualization, Analysis and Analytics with machine learning are helping the enterprises accomplish the goal of providing differentiated services for customers.

Enterprises should evaluate the applicability of analytics across functions and plan to empower various roles and profiles with the capabilities of analytical tools. Enterprises should be aware of the extensive investments made in Enterprise BI projects, and carefully evaluate making BI more accessible across the organization. Empowering most users with tools of Business insights and analytics can bring a new dimension to an organization’s intelligence. Advanced analytics can improve the productivity and efficiency of businesses cutting across the functions of an enterprise.

Cloud

Every enterprise in some form or other has adopted Cloud Computing such as mail messaging, communication and applications. Cloud-based services are now the foundation of SMAC adoption.

When enterprises lay out the foundation of Cloud, they need to identify the costs of delivering the existing services from on-premises compared to a Cloud service across Compute, Network, Storage, Applications and maintenance of the IT landscape. This assessment will determine which services should move to the Cloud from a business sense. The enterprise should also be aware of the thresholds of being on Opex model of cloud and should know when to bring back the workloads to on the premise model when the benefits are taken out from the cloud paradigm.

CMS IT Point of View: Not all workloads / IT services make business sense for migration to the Cloud. Enterprises should go with the following principles of evaluating Cloud to receive complete clarity on enterprise productivity (not only in IT but across services that are delivered as well):

(a) Non-value add activities that are eliminated with the adoption

(b) Minutes that can be saved per employee per day

(c) Convenience index for employees in different profiles to begin with

(d) Security, Governance and Risk for the initiative

Who Would Demand SMAC in an Enterprise? – Change Agents for New Paradigms!

Traditional work structures are being transformed and virtual communities have been replacing them. Hierarchy is being replaced with *Wirearchy. These structures are loose – expertise rules over experience, desire to contribute rules over the designations, people are willing to play their bit for the bigger picture and they find new models of collaboration for quicker, better and greater results than the traditional structures that enterprises have laid out.

Special interest groups in an enterprise can be change agents for adopting the paradigms of SMAC.

They use data and content for decision making, design a plan of action, and apply these technology shifts for yielding better results. These dynamic, self-motivated groups need to be connected anytime, anywhere, and they expect high-response infrastructure to back their actions. When such change agents are identified and backed with the right business use case within the enterprise, the paradigms of SMAC will yield a positive outcome.

Though the list is not exhaustive, some key questions when answered within the context of benefit metrics for the business help any forward-looking enterprises survive the onslaught of the next-gen companies and the business rivals in the market.

  • Does an enterprise-wide SMAC strategy reduce the current costs?
  • What degree of flexibility does it provide and whom?
  • If enterprises allow employees to build their own personal work/expertise groups, what happens to the enterprise’s own chain of command? Does it become inconsistent? Hierarchy Vs Wirearchy.
  • If enterprises do not allow the millennials and Gen Y build their own networks of excellence within the enterprise, won’t they leave for competition that is more forward-looking?
  • How will we see the results of increased collaboration at ground level?
  • What needs of users are addressed and how much will it benefit them?
  • Are we completely aware of information security, privacy regulations, and legal compliance when adopting the paradigms of SMAC?
  • What processes require re-alignment and re-designing in my enterprise? Are they beneficial?
