Security-as-a-service (SECaaS) or Internet-based security or cloud security products is an outsourcing model for security management. Here a third-party vendor delivers applications such as anti-virus software over the Internet. It can also refer to security management software provided in-house by an external organization.
Such systems are the next step in the evolution of Managed Security Services (MSS) and Gartner indicates that the demand for SECaaS will grow significantly and might substantially change existing IT security infrastructure environments aided by the fact that new forms of threats are also emerging with Cloud Computing’s growth.
SECaaS Benefits and Trends
Given the range of benefits that SECaaS offers—regular updates that are not reliant on user compliance, reduced costs, greater security expertise, outsourcing of administrative work and user provisioning—we expect to see the industry adopting cloud-based security services to take care of the basics so they can focus on more complex threats.
With its obvious benefits, cloud or SECaaS is one trend that is expected to grow manifold in the years to come. Another related trend is the movement towards systems such as Guardtek that provide more of a security as a service that will not only take away the burden of managing the complex systems but also reduce the costs of updating and securing these systems. Such systems and services also free up internal resources which could be better focused elsewhere, besides improving the service level of the security system and enabling better device management.
We also expect to see an increasing demand for customizable Security Management Software that will provide an easier way to manage the security operations.
The impact of SECaaS on Cyber-Security
SECaaS solutions have no client-side requirements of hardware or software and are fully operated and maintained by the external service provider. The highest degree of capacity and resource utilization is ensured by complete virtualization of the security service, making the service highly cost-effective to the customer and enabling pay-per-use models. It is possible to commence services instantly and it leverages inherent data aggregation benefits for service providers.
SECaaS models thus also provide flexibility to users to have additional customized security functionalities. This approach to security is highly inclusive and doesn’t differentiate between bigger businesses or smaller players. In fact, SMEs and SMBs are able to deploy a stronger and better security with the cloud than otherwise.
